Ron DeSantis has been putting all his energy into fixing the damage following Hurricane Helene.

The White House claims to have offered to conduct photo opportunities with the Florida Governor, but he refused the offer. DeSantis countered by saying the thought had not entered his mind. The Hill reports:

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said Monday he “was not aware” of post-Hurricane Helene calls from Vice President Harris after multiple reports emerged that he dodged them.

“I didn’t know she called me … I was not aware of that,” the Florida governor said at a Hurricane Milton-focused press conference.

The damage of the Hurricane has been severe on people in the Southern United States. NBC reports:

“It was his decision … to not attend or not be there with the president. … It is up to him,” she added. “We are doing our part, in the Biden-Harris administration, working — obviously FEMA is work — is on the ground, all hands on deck, whole of government. Robust approach here. And so, again, that’s for Gov. DeSantis to speak to.”

Later in the day, Harris also addressed this report, saying, “Moments of crisis, if nothing else, should really be the moment that anyone who calls themselves a leader says they’re going to put politics aside and put the people first. People are in desperate need of support right now and playing political games with this moment in these crisis situations, these are the height of emergency situations, it’s just utterly irresponsible and it is selfish.”

The effects of the Hurricane on turnout and swaying independent voters is still up in the air, but could have a dramatic effect one way or another.
