Joe Biden’s debate performance was terrible by all accounts, with even left wing pundits admitting Trump had the upper hand. More than a reflection of Trump’s performance, which was good, it showed with certainty that Biden is entering mental decline.
Sections of the Democratic Party are already calling for Biden to step down from reelection, letting another Democrat take his place. This calls back to attention that Biden’s own selection in 2020 was very much behind closed doors, with Obama likely orchestrating a grand bargain with Biden’s main competitors. The Hill says:
President Biden and his top aides are circling the wagons in the face of calls for him to consider dropping out of the 2024 race after a bad debate performance Thursday night against former President Trump.
The White House and Biden himself at fundraisers and on social media said the president had no intention of dropping out of the race, while Democratic lawmakers generally signaled support for Biden continuing to serve as their standard-bearer.
Although Biden is declining, his clients maintain an iron grip on the institutional Democrat Party. He will likely not be pushed out of power, but could be pressured to step down. Ultimately, it will be up to him and his wife to decide. The NY Post says:
“The decision-makers are two people — it’s the president and his wife,” one of the sources told the outlet. “Anyone who doesn’t understand how deeply personal and familial this decision will be isn’t knowledgeable about the situation.”
Biden’s trip to the presidential retreat in Maryland — where he spent a week preparing for Thursday’s debate — was planned in advance, White House Senior Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates said Saturday.
Biden does not have a clear successor. Although Harris is his VP, she commands very little support among Democrats and even less so across the nation. Buttigieg no longer has the same support behind him, but could potentially be a stand-in.
