Trump Goes After Kennedy

Donald Trump is taking shots at Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is running as a third party candidate. RFK’s third party candidacy has been a thorn in the sides of both Republicans and Democrats, who have their own reasons to fear this spoiler candidate.

For Biden, RFK is a former Democrat with high name recognition and Progressive values. For Trump, RFK appeals to independents who are skeptical of Big Pharma, also leading to a big overlap with his base. The Hill says:

“RFK Jr. is the most Radical Left Candidate in the race, by far. He’s a big fan of the Green New Scam, and other economy killing disasters,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I guess this would mean he is going to be taking votes from Crooked Joe Biden, which would be a great service to America.”

“His running mate, Nicole Shanahan, is even more ‘Liberal’ than him, if that’s possible. Kennedy is a Radical Left Democrat, and always will be!!! It’s great for MAGA, but the Communists will make it very hard for him to get on the Ballot,” he said, referring to his “Make America Great Again” slogan that has become a movement among conservatives. “Expect him, and her, to be indicted any day now, probably for Environmental Fraud!”

While RFK has been very pro-Israel, his green energy policy is highly appealing to a segment of progressives. The NY Times says:

Mr. Kennedy’s campaign did not respond to a request for comment. But on Tuesday, he made clear his intention to court voters who have soured on both candidates. “Our campaign is a spoiler all right,” he said during his announcement. “It is a spoiler for President Biden and for President Trump.”

Underlying Mr. Kennedy’s possible appeal are positions that defy easy political categorization or are inconsistent. A former environmental lawyer, Mr. Kennedy started his presidential campaign last year as a Democrat challenging Mr. Biden in the primary. After six months, he announced he would run as an independent candidate instead.

Trump did not attack Kennedy for a while, letting his campaign grow. Now that RFK commands respectable support numbers, Trump is making sure his less committed supporters do not switch sides. Keeping RFK in the race could be a boon to Trump if he takes enough support from Biden.
