Matt Gaetz, the firebrand Trump supporter in Congress, was previously nominated for Attorney General. This caused huge uproar in Congress, and Gaetz has now stepped down.
Gaetz could have several roles to help Trump Make America Great Again. He could be appointed to serve in the Senate, take his Congressional seat in January, or even have unofficial roles outside of government to advise Trump. Fox News says:
Gaetz announced his decision to withdraw on X early Thursday afternoon. In his post, he described his nomination as “a distraction.” Allegations of him purportedly paying underage women for sex had surfaced amid his nomination.
Trump took to social media shortly after the news broke that Gaetz would be withdrawing his name from consideration, writing on Truth Social, “I greatly appreciate the recent efforts of Matt Gaetz in seeking approval to be Attorney General. He was doing very well but, at the same time, did not want to be a distraction for the Administration, for which he has much respect. Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!”
Replacing Gaetz is Pam Bondi, Florida’s former Attorney General. Bondi has been on Trump’s defense team since his first impeachment. The Hill says:
“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again. I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!“ Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Bondi served as attorney general of Florida from 2011 to 2019 under then-Gov. Rick Scott.
Bondi will be partnered with Todd Blanche, his criminal defense lawyer turned Deputy Attorney General. Rooting out deep state criminals will most likely be their primary mandate.
