Bernie Sanders expressed his views on the Israel-Hamas conflict, claiming that Israel has broken international law and should not receive American military aid. Although this is to be expected from him, it is more radical than his previous calls for a ceasefire.

Gaza remains one of the most densely populated places on earth, making any war there extremely dangerous for civilians. While Bernie has condemned Hamas, this has not been the case for the even more radical and younger Squad members. Fox News reports:

“Any objective observer knows Israel has broken international law, it has broken American law, and in my view, Israel should not be receiving another nickel in U.S. military aid,” Sanders said in an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “Look the facts are quite clear. Hamas is a terrible disgusting terrorist organization that began this war. Though what Israel has done over the last seven months has not just gone to war against Hamas, it has gone to war against the entire Palestinian people. And results have been absolutely catastrophic.”

His remarks come in response to the U.S. State Department on Friday criticizing Israel’s use of U.S-supplied arms in a way that may be “inconsistent” in “mitigating civilian harm” in the war in Gaza.

The American people remain generally behind Israel, though a greater number than ever have expressed various other opinions. Some on the right remain neutral but want no American tax dollars to go to the Middle East. An ever growing number on the far left have called for the destruction of Israel as a state, naively believing that Israelis and Palestinians can coexist in one state. The Hill says:

Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, has repeatedly called for a stop to U.S. aid to Israel amid the civilian death toll and depleting humanitarian resources in Gaza, where than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed since Hamas’s Oct. 7 attacks.

Polls have varied in their indications of Americans’ sentiment over the war. In a poll last month, nearly one-third of Americans said Israel has gone too far in Gaza, while another poll released in recent weeks found an overwhelming majority of Americans support Israel in its war against Hamas.

Republicans have to remain careful on this issue if they wish to let Democrats destroy each other. Too much support for Israel will unify the Left against everyday Americans. Ignoring the issue could have them labeled as “soft on terror” or isolationist.
