The Supreme Court has agreed to enforce an Idaho law that prevents minors from genital mutilation. An inferior federal court had previously placed an injunction on the law, though now only two minors challenging the law are exempt from it while it makes its way through the courts.

Bans on trans surgery for minors has taken the nation by storm, as conservatives stand up against the barbaric practice. Since minors are not legally able to consent to many things, it makes sense for similar procedures to also be blocked. The Hill says:

The Supreme Court granted a request by Idaho’s attorney general on Monday to lift a lower court’s temporary injunction preventing the state from enforcing its felony ban on gender-affirming care for minors.

The justices granted Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador’s (R) request to narrow a December district court order blocking the state’s ban in its entirety, allowing the law to be enforced against individuals other than the two transgender teenagers challenging it in court.

Doctors who perform these procedures are particularly targeted, hoping to tackle the supply side of the problem. Many other countries in the world, including liberal European ones, have banned the practice. The NY Times continues:

The law, passed by the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature, makes it a felony for doctors to provide transgender medical care for minors, including hormone treatment.

States around the country have pushed to restrict transgender rights. At least 20 states with Republican-controlled legislatures, including Idaho, have enacted legislation that limits access for gender transition care for minors.

Americans are generally torn about how to deal with transgenderism in society, but a majority do support limiting surgical changes for minors. Teenagers especially are at risk of mental difficulties during their high school years, and banning surgery will allow them more time to reflect on that choice.
