Mike Gallagher, a GOP Congressman for Wisconsin, will not seek reelection this year due to his refusal to impeach Mayorkas. In the second vote to impeach Mayorkas, Gallagher was the one holding up the vote due to a razor thin margin in the House for Republicans.

Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty in keeping the border open has been the focal point for the GOP. Gallagher’s refusal to give Republicans an easy win makes many question his motives, or his naiveté about Democrats’ ruthlessness when they are in power. Yahoo says:

U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher, a key Republican Congressman who has spearheaded House pushback against the Chinese government, announced Saturday that he won’t run for a fifth term. The announcement comes just days after he angered his fellow Republicans by refusing to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The GOP has been looking to oust Mayorkas as a way to punish the Biden administration over its handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. A House impeachment vote Tuesday fell just one vote short. Gallagher was one of three Republicans who opposed impeachment. His fellow Republicans surrounded him on the House floor in an attempt to change his mind, but he refused to change his vote.

Gallagher was otherwise very active in fighting Chinese influence in the United States. He chaired the committee on combatting the Chinese Communist Party and its various ways of subverting American society. Fox News continues:

In his statement, Gallagher, who has represented Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District in the House since 2017, also offered his appreciation for those who supported his career over time.

”Thank you to the good people of Northeast Wisconsin for the honor of a lifetime. Four terms serving you has strengthened my conviction that America is the greatest country in the history of the world. And though my title may change, my mission will always remain the same: deter America’s enemies and defend the Constitution.”

Mayorkas’ impeachment, if it does eventually go through, will be an important symbolic victory. Due to the Senate being controlled by Democrats, he will most likely not be removed from office. Signaling to the American people that Republicans are united and ready to fight for their voters is important for electoral enthusiasm.
