Top NYPD officials are under federal investigations. This comes on the heels of the New York City Mayor’s close associates also being looked into.
Federal agents seized phones of the NYPD commissioner, who could have ties to the mayor’s improper fundraising. The NY Times reports:
Federal agents on Wednesday zeroed in on the highest ranks of Mayor Eric Adams’s administration, searching a home and seizing the phones of the New York City police commissioner, the first deputy mayor, the schools chancellor and others, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
The actions were unrelated to a separate corruption inquiryfocused on the mayor and his campaign fund-raising, some of the people said. But the revelation that not only the mayor but also many of the city’s most senior officials are embroiled in federal investigations further destabilizes an administration that is already reeling from other legal problems.
Federal prosecutors from the powerful Southern District Of New York are leading the investigation. Sometimes called the “Sovereign District of New York”, the US Attorney is one of the most powerful individuals in the country with little oversight. The NY Post says:
The probes are being led by federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York, which has also been eyeing Adams’ 2021 campaign in another unrelated high-profile investigation, sources told The Post.
Adams broke his daylong silence on the raids Thursday afternoon as he exited City Hall to a throng of reporters.
The Biden led DOJ could be engaging in a battle for the Democratic Party against the important mayor of New York. Revelations from behind the scenes are few, but more could be going on.
