Kari Lake has secured the nomination for the Republican Party in the Senate election. She will be facing Reuben Gallego in the November election.
Lake is a well known MAGA conservative in Arizona, having already run for the Governor’s race in 2022. Politico says:
One of the biggest Senate races of the year is now set: MAGA star Kari Lake will face off against Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego in Arizona as the GOP tries to claw back power in a state that has become a high-stakes battleground.
Gallego and Lake easily clinched their respective parties’ nominations Tuesday for the Senate seat, which is open after independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema chose not to run for reelection. Gallego was uncontested in his primary, and Lake fended off two candidates, including Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, her closest competition.
The Arizona Republican Party has been in crisis since the death of John McCain in 2018. Jeff Flake, another liberal Republican, retired in 2019. Since then, Democrats have been winning all major races in the state, regardless of whether the Republican opponent was a moderate or MAGA. CBS News says:
The once-crowded field of Republicans looking at the Senate race thinned out when Lake, who built a national profile in Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement in an unsuccessful 2022 bid for Arizona governor, made clear she planned to run for the seat.
Lake defeated Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, who had contended he is more electable and the best candidate to secure the border. But he struggled to raise the money needed to make his case to voters. Through the end of June, Lake had raised $10.3 million compared with Lamb’s $2 million.
With Trump having enough momentum in this election, Republicans might secure the Senate seat in Arizona. However, the Arizona Party officials has shown gross incompetence in the past and could end up losing this race too.
