FBI Uncovers Shooter Information

The FBI has been working to uncover the motives of the failed assassin who took shots at Donald Trump. Some information has him pegged as a “conservative”, which would make his motive that much more complicated. Others place him as a leftist loon, but he remains an enigma.

A key piece in the investigation is the shooter’s “Steam” account, a platform for video games. The shooter allegedly posted threatening messages on it, but the account could possibly be a fake. The Verge says:

FBI officials told Congress on Wednesday that the 20-year-old who shot at former President Donald Trump may have posted a warning on Steam before the attack — but CNN is now reporting that investigators think the account is fake.

Investigators at the bureau “gained access” to Thomas Matthew Crooks’ phone earlier this week and have been combing through it to determine his motive and put together a timeline of events. In a briefing with members of Congress on Wednesday, FBI officials said Crooks had used his phone and other devices to search for information about and images of Trump and President Joe Biden — and that he left a cryptic message on Steam announcing the shooting, according to reports by The New York Times and ABC News.

The shooter’s social media presence is largely non-existent, which is extremely odd for a young man in his 20s, even if he did not post anything on them. ABC News continues:

The suspect’s phone was one of several devices that law enforcement investigators had collected as they worked to piece together a timeline of the assassination attempt against the former president during a Saturday rally.

“What is beginning to emerge is a portrait of a troubled young person who turned to violence,” said John Cohen, an ABC News contributor and former head of intelligence at the Department of Homeland Security.

The investigation will likely get lost in the upcoming news regarding the Republican Convention and ramping up of the election. The major concern for all politicians is the Secret Service’s performance that day and what it says about the Federal Government’s competency.
