Donald Trump has chosen James David (JD) Vance as his Vice President. Hailing from Ohio, Vance was elected in the Senate in 2022 on a very MAGA platform.

Vance came to prominence following his book “Hillbilly Elegy”, which described his childhood living in poverty. Vance eventually joined the Marine Corps, serving in Iraq. He then went to Yale Law School and worked as a venture capitalist. His brand of conservatism is generally socially conservative but moderate and protectionist in fiscal policies, hoping to reach the forgotten man.

The assassination attempt on Donald Trump has galvanized his supporters, and lended an aura of invincibility to his campaign. Rather than exclusively focus his speech on attacking Joe Biden, Trump will instead The Washington Examiner interviewed Trump, where he said:

“The speech I was going to give on Thursday was going to be a humdinger,” Trump said. “Had this not happened, this would’ve been one of the most incredible speeches” aimed mostly at the policies of President Joe Biden. “Honestly, it’s going to be a whole different speech now.”

He has switched, he said, from planning to excite his voter base to one that demonstrates his belief that the attack on him at a rally in Pennsylvania had changed the election campaign entirely. Both Republicans and Democrats have acknowledged this in the aftermath of Saturday’s shocking incident.

Vance will reinvigorate his supporters, and hopefully lead to greater gains in the Midwest. However, Donald Trump will have to solidify his gains among independents, who might be turned off by him.
