The Libertarian Party is holding its national convention, where several major political figures vied for this voting block. Both Trump and Kennedy are scheduled to speak.
Kennedy in particular is hoping for a large segment of the Libertarian vote, as his COVID policy is inline with the Party. As a third party, the LP is keen on supporting a third party candidate, but will likely not pick Kennedy as their nominee. The Associated Press says:
Donald Trump plans to use an address Saturday night at the Libertarians’ national convention to court a segment of mostly conservative voters that has often been skeptical of the former president, while trying to ensure that party activists aren’t drawn to the campaign of independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Libertarians will pick their White House nominee during the gathering in Washington that wraps up Sunday. Kennedy, who initially ran in the Democratic primary, addressed the convention Friday but has indicated he is not interested in being the Libertarian nominee.
Trump and his team is also courting the Libertarian vote, seeing them as wayward conservatives. Biden, on the other hand, is not wasting his time as their values are very distant from that of the Democrats. The NY Times continues:
Speaking at the convention later on Friday, Vivek Ramaswamy, the entrepreneur and former Republican presidential candidate who is now an outspoken supporter of Mr. Trump, was booed at least twice when he mentioned him.
Advisers to the Trump campaign have said that Mr. Trump’s speech on Saturday will most likely highlight the overlap between his policies and the Libertarian Party’s. They view Mr. Trump’s appearance as a chance to win over voters who may see him as having a better chance to oust Mr. Biden than a third-party candidate would.
The Libertarian Party does not represent most “libertarians” in the country, who mostly just want to be left alone and value individual liberty. Instead, it focuses on fringe ideas that do not always have wide support, and do not focus on fixing problems with realistic solutions.
