Governor Abbott Goes After Rioters

Greg Abbott issued a pardon for former sergeant Daniel Perry. Perry was convicted of murder following a shootout with armed BLM protesters. Perry’s car was swarmed by BLM protesters, including armed ones, where he shot his way out of the situation.

The prosecutor used Perry’s political views as evidence of intent. Abbott followed the recommendations of the Board of Pardons, who reviewed the case. Fox News says:

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday issued a full pardon for a former U.S. Army sergeant convicted of murder in the shooting death of an armed protester during a 2020 Black Lives Matter march.  

The move by Abbott came minutes after a unanimous recommendation by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles that Daniel Perry be pardoned and have his firearms rights restored. 

At a time when protesters are breaking laws and holding up free transit for people, this is a clear message that this will not be tolerated in Texas. The NY Times says:

“Texas has one of the strongest ‘stand your ground’ laws of self-defense that cannot be nullified by a jury or a progressive district attorney,” Mr. Abbott, a Republican, said in a statement on Thursday. “I thank the board for its thorough investigation, and I approve their pardon recommendation.”

The family of the protester, Garrett Foster, a 28-year-old former mechanic in the U.S. Air Force, expressed disbelief at the decision and saw a political motivation. Republicans, including the Texas attorney general, Ken Paxton, and the political pundit Tucker Carlson, had called for Mr. Perry’s pardon.

Americans see crime and illegal immigration as the nation’s top priority. By properly addressing it when they can, Conservatives will likely succeed in November.
