A Minnesota Democrat Representative was arrested in Detroit over a burglary attempt. Nicole Mitchell unlawfully entered the home of her stepmother, from where she was allegedly attempting to retrieve her father’s ashes and other personal belongings.
Mitchell’s bail was set at $40,000 so she will likely be freed soon. While she has to stay in Michigan most of the time, she is able to return to Minnesota for official business. Without that, Republicans would have parity with Democrats in the State House. KSTP reports:
As previously reported by 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS, Detroit Lakes police arrested Mitchell after being called to the 700 block of Granger Road at around 4:45 a.m. about a burglary happening in her home. When authorities responded and searched the home, they found Mitchell inside and arrested her.
Mitchell appeared in court late Tuesday morning, where a judge ordered she can be released without posting bail as long as she abides by conditions such as making future court appearances, remain law abiding, don’t leave the state with the exception of Cass County in North Dakota and traveling for official duties, among other conditions. An alternate, unconditional bail was set at $40,000.
Democrats have remained silent on the issue, but Minnesota Republicans have spoken out against her, hoping for a resignation. Mitchell’s district remains heavily Democrat, so her resignation should not change the balance of power. Fox News continues:
Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, of East Grand Forks, released a statement to news outlets saying that he was shocked by the arrest, but did not know any further details.
“The public expects Legislators to meet a high standard of conduct,” Johnson said. “As information comes out, we expect the consequences to meet the actions, both in the court of law, and in her role at the legislature.”
Minnesota is a key state in the 2024 election, relatively Democrat at the national level but always at risk of flipping. Its neighbor Wisconsin, on the other hand, will be one of the few states to determine the outcome of the Presidential election.
