Donald Trump is engaged in his New York “hush money” trial but is already facing legal conflicts. While he is stuck in New York, his federal trial over alleged classified documents is still ongoing.
Overlapping trials and making Trump’s defense harder only serves to confirm his narrative that the state is doing everything in its power to keep him out of the White House. The New York trial is already an aberration, with no equivalent crime being trialed as a felony in the history of the state. Newsweek says:
Former President Donald Trump has asked the judge presiding over his mishandled classified documents case in Florida to delay court proceedings while he’s on trial in New York in a case involving hush money payments made to an adult film actress.
In Thursday’s filing, Trump showed his support for his lawyer’s motion asking U.S. District Court Judge Aileen Cannon, who is presiding over the documents case, to delay some pre-trial deadlines so they have “adequate time to prepare the defense.”
A big part of the documents case rests on the evidence, which is classified and can only be accessed in a SCIF. This is also a trial that goes against equal protection before the law, as Biden himself was not charged despite having committed the same crimes. CNN reports:
“Simply put, President Trump and his counsel cannot prepare — or even discuss — the required filings anywhere but an appropriate SCIF, a virtually impossible task given President Trump and Messrs. Blanche and Bove’s involvement in People v. Trump,” in New York, Trump’s attorneys wrote in a court filing.
Trump is charged with illegally retained national defense information and concealing documents in violation of witness-tampering laws, among other alleged crimes. He has pleaded not guilty.
The trials remain Donald Trump’s biggest impediment to winning the Presidency. While many see this as state collusion to keep him out of the White House, there are still some who would be hard pressed to vote for Trump if he received a felony conviction, even before an all-Blue jury.
