Joe Biden continues to face discontent within his party in Congress. Nancy Pelosi is now backing the squad in asking Biden and Blinken to stop all arms shipment to Israel.
Centrist Democrats have long supported Israel, and have usual made common cause with Republicans. Israel’s continued assault on Gaza, however, has caused many to listen to the far left of the party. The Guardian reports:
More than three dozen congressional Democrats – including representative Nancy Pelosi, the former House speaker and a key Joe Biden ally – signed a letter to the president and the secretary of state Antony Blinken, urging a halt to weapons transfers to Israel.
“In light of the recent strike against aid workers and the ever-worsening humanitarian crisis, we believe it is unjustifiable to approve these weapons transfers,” the letter said. It was signed by Pelosi and 36 other Democrats including Representatives Barbara Lee, Rashida Tlaib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Biden has had harsh words for Netanyahu, but has nevertheless continued to furnish Israel with weapons. Biden has however not vetoed a resolution condemning Israel in the UN and asking for a ceasefire. Yahoo continues:
Biden has voiced strong support for Israel since Hamas-led militants killed more than 1,100 people in their Oct. 7 attack on the country — sparking large protest votes in some states’ Democratic primaries.
His tone, however, shifted this week during a discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Biden called for an “immediate cease-fire” and told Netanyahu that future U.S. support will depend on what Israel does to protect civilians and aid workers in the Gaza Strip. The current situation was “unacceptable,” Biden said.
With an attack from Iran potentially imminent, Israel will be in dire need of munitions. The continued blockade from the Houthis, as well as wide support for Palestinians from the Muslim world, mean that America is stuck behind a rock and a hard place.
