Trump’s Money Trouble Is About to Get Worse

Donald Trump is supposed to be paying his civil judgement in New York, but has been unable to secure a bond. While he currently has almost enough cash to cover the judgement, Trump also needs the money to fund his Presidential campaign.

New York exerting pressure on financial and insurance companies to deny Trump a bond is not entirely out of the question. New York stands accused of doing a similar thing to the NRA, which is currently being adjudicated at the Supreme Court. Fox News reports:

“Through hard work, talent, and luck, I currently have almost five hundred million dollars in cash, a substantial amount of which I intended to use in my campaign for president,” Trump posted Friday morning on his Truth Social.

“The often overturned political hack judge on the rigged and corrupt A.G. case, where I have done nothing wrong, knew this, wanted to take it away from me, and that’s where and why he came up with the shocking number which, coupled with his crazy interest demand, is approximately $454,000,000,” Trump said, referring to New York Judge Arthur Engoron, who presided over New York Attorney General Letitia James’ case against him.

If Trump does not pay the judgement or the bond, his assets will likely be seized by New York. This will trigger further legal issues and make Trump vulnerable in the upcoming election. Politico says:

“If he does not have funds to pay off the judgment, then we will seek judgment enforcement mechanisms in court, and we will ask the judge to seize his assets,” she told ABC News last month. And James has already taken preliminary steps: She has filed the Manhattan judgment in neighboring Westchester County, a precursor to any enforcement actions there.

But even if Trump fails to obtain a bond by the deadline, don’t expect to see James or her deputies immediately marching over to Trump Tower to change the locks.

Unless the Supreme Court can intervene, Trump cannot rely on the protection of any other organ of state power. His supporters will likely have to donate more than usual to make up for this shortfall, further disadvantaging Republicans against Democrats.
