Trump and Biden both successfully won their party’s Michigan primary, making the matchup evermore certain. The breakdown of the results, however, reveal a different story for both Trump and Biden, and might give insight on momentum in the 2024 election.
Trump defeated Haley by 40 points, making this one of the largest upsets in this year’s primaries. Trump will march into Super Tuesday as the definite winner. Harry is most likely staying in the race for technical reasons now, to fundraise so she can later control a large Political Action Committee after the election. Fox News says:
Voters in Michigan handed decisive victories to President Biden and former President Trump Tuesday, increasing the odds of a 2020 rematch as the candidates look to solidify their frontrunner positions on Super Tuesday.
The Associated Press called Michigan for Biden and Trump shortly after polls closed Tuesday, leaving both candidates undefeated in their bid to once again represent their respective parties in 2024’s presidential election.
The “Uncommitted” vote reached 100,960 by the end, representing 13.3% of the vote in Michigan. According to the official 2020 tallies, Biden beat Trump there by 150,000 votes, meaning this protest vote could have an effect in the general. The New York Times says:
By 10:30 p.m., more than 34,000 votes for “uncommitted” had been counted, with only about a quarter of the total vote tallied. Strong turnout in the Detroit area meant that the movement could win enough votes to send at least one delegate to the Democratic National Convention.
Soon after, Mr. Biden released a statement that thanked “every Michigander who made their voice heard today” but did not mention Israel, Gaza or the protest movement.
Overall, Trump mobilized more voters for himself than all the Democrats put together. Biden is the incumbent, meaning his turnout was lower than it will be for election time. Trump, however, is building a turn out the vote system that will make this race competitive.
