The Republican House failed to impeach Secretary Mayorkas when three of its members side with Democrats. This includes Tom Clintock from California, Ken Buck from Colorado., and Mike Gallagher, from Wisconsin.
Republicans have an increasingly slim majority in the House since Kevin McCarthys was Speaker, making unity essential. Fox News reports:
The Republican-led House of Representatives on Tuesday failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his handling of the crisis at the southern border – marking a major blow for House Republicans who have pushed for Mayorkas’ removal.
The House voted mostly along party lines, but Republicans suffered a number of defections which torpedoed the vote. Four Republicans ultimately voted no: Rep., and Blake Moore, R-Utah, who switched his vote at the last minute in a procedural move to be able to bring the resolution back to the floor.
The state of the border and Biden’s willful lack of enforcement lead to Mayorkas’ attempted impeachment. However, Republicans can always count on weak members to break ranks and cave to the Democrats. Breitbart explains why these Republicans on paper voted against the impeachment:
Buck, who announced last year this would be his final term and has openly expressed a desire to work for msnbc or CNN, and McClintock, who last year told Breitbart News Daily he believes the impeachment is unconstitutional, were seen as immovable.
The defeat is the latest for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who inherited a slim majority that has been decimated further by the ejection of Rep. George Santos (R-NY), early retirement of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), and, temporarily, the absence of Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), who is recovering from cancer.
Republicans will likely be hamstrung for the rest of the year, as Democrats control the Senate and White House. Only in November will Republicans have the chance to win power at get polls.
