Marjorie Taylor Greene, the combative Representative from Georgia, introduced a resolution to censure Ilhan Omar as a foreign agent. This followed her controversial comments where she appeared to put the interests of Somalia ahead of America’s.

In a speech given in Somali to her constituents, she made it known that she would use whatever influence she could to prevent Ethiopia from striking a deal with Somaliland. Somaliland is a breakaway province from Somalia, which has achieved a more peaceful existence compared to its neighbor. The Hill reports:

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) moved to force a vote on censuring Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Thursday over a disputed translation of comments the Minnesota Democrat made about Somalia and Somaliland, accusing her of being a “foreign agent.”

Greene called her censure legislation to the floor as a privileged resolution, a procedural gambit that forces leadership to hold a vote within two legislative days. Leadership can either bring the resolution to the floor for a vote or motion to table it, both of which would require majority support.

Greene’s accusation of being a foreign agent stems from Omar’s own comments, where she described her role in Congress as advocating for the interests of Somalia and Islam. The Daily Wire explains:

Controversy over Omar’s speech largely rests on how the Democrat’s remarks to a group of Somali supporters have been translated from Somali to English. She was speaking about a controversial port deal between Ethiopia and Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland. Some have called for her expulsion from Congress while Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) demanded an ethics investigation into Omar’s “appalling, Somalia-first comments.”

According to the interpretation in Greene’s censure resolution, Omar spoke about telling people how “the U.S. Government will only do what Somalians in the U.S. tell them to do. They will do what we want and nothing else. They must follow our orders and that is how we will safeguard the interest of Somalia.”

Omar is not the first Congressman to put the interests of a foreign power over that of the United States. Unrestricted immigration only brings foreign quarrels onto US shores and forces Americans to become entangled.
