The House Homeland Security Committee moved the impeachment case against Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas one step closer. The full chamber will now be voting on impeaching him, a measure that is likely to succeed.
Democrats control the Senate, so the Secretary will likely survive the two-thirds conviction threshold needed to remove him. This would still be a damaging blow to the Biden Administration, whose record will be judged in the November election. The NY Times reports:
House Republicans voted early Wednesday to advance an impeachment case against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to the full chamber, moving one step closer to impeaching the first Cabinet member in almost 150 years.
In an 18-15 vote along party lines following a marathon meeting, members of the House Homeland Security Committee advanced two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, accusing him of “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and breach of the public trust. The move came even as Democrats repeatedly asserted during the hearing that Republicans have no constitutional basis to impeach Mayorkas, and noted GOP lawmakers have struggled in two recent hearings to detail clear evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors.
The importance of border enforcement was shown again when migrants violently attacked NYPD officers attempting to conduct an arrest. The gang of migrants had previously been arrested for shoplifting and pickpocketing. The migrants were all released without bail. Fox News reports:
A pair of New York City police officers were allegedly attacked by several migrants near Times Square over the weekend, with the suspects later being released without bail following their arrest.
Surveillance footage released by the New York Police Department shows an NYPD officer and lieutenant telling the migrants to move along around 8:30 p.m. Saturday on West 42nd Street in Manhattan, the New York Post reported. A scuffle ensues as the officers are seen apparently trying to subdue someone on the ground.
Immigration is now a top issue with voters, along with the economy. Donald Trump is expected to see his support rise as the Biden Administration fails to solve these two major issues.
