A New York jury awarded Trump accuser $85 million in damages. E. Jean Carroll sued then President Trump for defamatory statements he made in 2019, calling her a “whack job.”
Carroll, a former journalist, originally accused Trump of sexual assault, which he strongly denied. As this is a civil trial, the verdict was entirely focused on the statement rather than the facts of the case itself. The Daily Caller reports:
A jury awarded former Elle Magazine writer E. Jean Carroll a total of $83.3 million in damages Friday in her defamation trial against former President Donald Trump.
The jury awarded her $65 million in punitive damages and $18.3 million in compensatory damages after Trump allegedly acted maliciously in his remarks about Carroll, according to Politico legal reporter Erica Orden. Carroll sued the former president for alleged defamatory statements he made about her in 2019 and for calling her a “whack job” during a CNN town hall in May.
The case was tried by a Democrat judge in the liberal city of New York, all but guaranteeing the verdict against Trump. This high sum of $85 million is part and parcel of draining Trump’s resources before
Trump promised to appeal the decision in a statement released after the jury’s findings.
“Absolutely ridiculous!” the statement began. “I fully disagree with both verdicts, and will be appealing this whole Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republican Party. Our Legal System is out of control, and being used as a political weapon. They have taken away all First Amendment Rights. THIS IS NOT AMERICA!”

Trump’s numerous lawsuits and criminal charges make it difficult for him to campaign as effectively as before. However, this contributes to his appeal among the Republican base and could boost turnout among them.
