Fulton County DA Fani Willis is in hot water. Her unprecedented charges against President Trump, including a mugshot, have been decried as a political witch-hunt. Now, Willis is facing a serious ethical complaint that could result in serious problems for her.
Willis appointed a private lawyer, Nathan Wade, as special counsel to prosecute Trump. It was later revealed that Willis and Wade were having an affair. The entire case is now up for additional scrutiny. CBS News says:
When Fulton County, Georgia, District Attorney Fani Willis spoke at a historically Black church in Atlanta last Sunday, she gave a full-throated defense of Nathan Wade, a private lawyer whom she appointed to lead her 2020 election interference case against former President Donald Trump – and with whom she’s accused of having an affair.
She lauded him as “a superstar” with “impeccable credentials” who is uniquely qualified to handle the complex prosecution, leaving unsaid that Wade was at best her third choice for the high-stakes job. Willis, unable to find someone in the DA’s office with the stature and credentials needed for the case, turned to at least two other legal heavy hitters in Atlanta before settling on Wade, as set out in “Find Me the Votes,” a new book about the investigation into the alleged conspiracy to subvert the 2020 election.
Trump spoke out against the charges, calling them tainted due to the affair. This comes after Trump’s large Iowa victory which will likely seal his nomination. Fox News reports:
Trump’s co-defendant in the Georgia case, Michael Roman, accused Willis and Wade of having an “improper” and “clandestine” affair at the same time that appointments were being made for the 2020 election interference case.
“You had a very big event yesterday as you saw in Georgia where the district attorney is totally compromised. The case has to be dropped,” Trump told reporters last week. “They went after 18 or 20 people.… She was out of her mind. Now it turns out that case is totally compromised.”
The Georgia Attorney General has not gotten involved in the case, but might soon. The Georgia Republican Administration has had conflicts with Trump, but could still step in if the cry out is large enough.
