Rudy Giuliani is filing for bankruptcy following a defamation suit against him. The Obama appointed judge ruled that Giuliani defamed two Georgia poll workers, and owed $150 million in restitution.
Giuliani’s legal trouble began following the . This is part of a wider attack on Trump and his allies in the wake of the January 6th riot. The Hill reports:
The judge assigned to the defamation suit against former New York City Mayor and former Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani ordered immediate enforcement of judgment in the case Wednesday.
In most cases, Giuliani would have a 30-day “automatic stay for enforcement of judgment pending resolution of any appeal.” Plaintiffs in the case sought to dissolve that automatic stay, a motion Giuliani called abnormal in court filings. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell ruled Wednesday to dissolve that 30-day grace period, calling it “both appropriate and warranted.”
Giuliani disclosed that he owed over $100 million, contested with only $10 million in assets. With the judgement being immediate, Giuliani’s attempts at restructuring his finances will be difficult. CNN says:
Rudy Giuliani filed for bankruptcy in federal court in New York on Thursday, just days after a jury ordered him to pay nearly $150 million to two former Georgia election workers for defamation.
According to the filing, Giuliani listed debts between $100 million and $500 million, and assets worth up to $10 million.
This move, along with others, will put a dent in Trump’s 2024 election. All out lawfare has been declared against him, and he will have to overcome these odds to win the presidency.
